Degree in Biology, PhD from the University of Seville, and senior scientist at the Institute of Natural Resources and Agrobiology of Seville (IRNAS-CSIC). He works in soil and plant ecology, particularly in soil-plant and animal-soil-plant relationships, which have been addressed in very diverse plant communities and ecosystems (herbaceous communities in flood systems, scrub of semi-arid regions, forest systems dominated by Quercus sclerophiles). The interactions studied include both direct (effect of biotic or abiotic factors of soil on plants) and indirect (animal-plant, animal-animal or plant-plant effects, mediated by soil) interactions.
