He graduated in Biology from the University of Évora, Portugal, and did his PhD thesis in Estación Biológica de Doñana (CSIC), obtaining the title from the University Pablo de Olavide, Spain. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv), in Germany, before returning to Spain. His research is focused on the areas of ecology and biogeogrphy, with the general aim of understanding the ecological processes underlying the distribution of biodiversity in space and time.
